How to choose a SIC code

What a SIC code is for

A Standard Industrial Classification code records the nature of a company's business on the register. Companies House asks for at least one code at incorporation and on each confirmation statement. It is a classification for statistics and register users, not a licence or permission.

A four-step method

1. Write your main activity in one plain sentence. "We install electrical systems in homes" is easier to classify than "we deliver compliant infrastructure solutions".
2. Search the wording, not the jargon. Use our SIC code finder to search the official list by code, official description or everyday business terms.
3. Compare the closest two or three codes. Read the official descriptions side by side and pick the one that matches your revenue-generating activity.
4. Add a second code only if you genuinely have a second activity. Up to four codes can be recorded.

When two codes both look right

Prefer the more specific code, and prefer the activity that earns the money. A company that both builds software and advises clients on technology usually records development if that is the main deliverable, and consultancy if advice is. Broad catch-all codes such as "other business support service activities" are legitimate, but they tell readers of your record almost nothing.

Dormant and holding companies

A dormant company records the dormant code. A company whose activity is owning shares in other companies is usually a holding company rather than a trader.

Changing a code

If your activity changes, update the code on your next confirmation statement. Nothing about a SIC code prevents you from doing other lawful work.
